Demon King Overview

The fishermen by the Ji River often say that beneath the Nine Abysses, there is the Li Long. Under its neck lies the Wisdom Pearl, which bestows great wisdom upon whoever obtains it, hence its value is more precious than gold. Many people, disregarding the danger, wish to explore and obtain the pearl. Only a few who return alive end up crying, saying that not only did they return empty-handed, but they also encountered the fierce Dragon King underwater. With a pair of dual hammers, he could summon thunderous power, crushing them to nothing.

For hundreds of years, people continued to venture into the river in search of the pearl. Everyone says that the flooding of the Ji River is surely due to the offense caused by the pearl seekers against the Dragon King. Therefore, they built magnificent temples to worship and appease him. One day, a young man arrived. He wore a colorful robe and a string of moon-white beads, claiming to be a thief-saint with awe-inspiring skills. Everyone advised him against offending the Dragon King, but he ignored their warnings and dove into the water towards the Dragon Palace.

He found the palace devoid of soldiers and guards, with a desolate courtyard. Intrigued by this, he headed towards the sea cave and encountered a strong, dark-skinned man sitting among piled crates, looking troubled.

Hearing the noise, the Dragon King hurriedly flipped out a string of pearls from a crate and tossed it carelessly on the ground, saying:

“I cannot give you my Wisdom Pearl, but take this one and leave quickly.”

The young man questioned curiously: “The people on shore speak ill of your ferocity. If they were slightly disrespectful…?”

The Dragon King interrupted: “The sins of mortals are punished either by being struck by my thunder or drowned for miles.” The Dragon King continued: “I have no interest in the flesh of ordinary humans. Do you take me for a common demon? Without orders, I dare not act recklessly. Those people on shore are spreading baseless rumors. Just because my father made a slight mistake, he was struck down. We dragons are as honest as can be…”

After hearing this, the young man asked:

“I have heard of the incident with the Jing River Dragon King, and it was indeed unjust. Are you now in such a situation because of entanglements?” The Dragon King, recognizing that the man was not an ordinary person, replied: “Exactly. I don’t want to go to the Dragon Platform. I consulted a fortune teller, and he said that as long as I hide in a secluded place, kill the monkey heading west, I can redeem my actions.”

The young man pondered and said: “I also consulted a fortune teller before coming here. Since it is fate, why don’t you come to my house? I happen to live on the path to the west.” The Dragon King was delighted to hear this. The young man added: “But it won’t be a free stay. All the treasures in your sea cave must be handed over to me.”

After the young man’s visit, the number of people venturing into the river to search for pearls gradually decreased. Eventually, people abandoned the pearl-seeking practice altogether, and no one spoke of the Dragon King and Wisdom Pearl beneath the Nine Abysses ever again.
